Sharing data and exchanging information in real time has become a mandatory requirement for substation monitoring and control systems. The WebCAN substation monitoring and control system incorporates fast and highly efficient data exchange software based on non-propriety Ethernet 100 Base T or 100 FX Ethernet networks.

A local Ethernet or wide area network is used as communications backbone in a fully distributed multi-processing system providing process data to distributed software applications across the WebCAN system. If required third party hardware platforms with different operating systems can be integrated executing external software applications using system information provided via the Ethernet network. Several protocols are available including IEC 101, 103, 104, ModBUS, DNP3 and IEC 61850. 

Individual processing units in the system are collecting field information from field input modules, processing the information locally with standard process automation software, converting information into SCADA protocol frames, exchange and manage information in a distributed database system and initiate control commands to field output modules. Field Input/Output modules are linked to processing units using cost effective fiber optic links communicating using a CANOpen fieldbus protocol profile.

Substation control and other plant process automation tasks can be programmed easily using standardized IEC-61131 software tools in addition to IEC 61850 in a local or wide area network.
